Sickle Fern

Family:            Sinopteridaceae

Plant:              An erect fern up to 40cm high with creeping wiry rhizome.

Fronds:           Tough, shiny green, 20-40cm long and pinnate with lanceolate to linear often falcate sessile segments 2-6cm long and 2-15mm wide borne on red-brown stems. The fronds are dark green above and paler on the underside.

Sori:                In a continuous band 1mm wide along segment margin.

Rhizome:      Creeping, rigid and wiry.

Habitat:           In large colonies in rocky places in wet sclerophyll forests and in rainforest margins.

Features:       Arrangement of sori. Shape of frond segments.

Name:

Pellaea            From Greek = dark-coloured (referring to its fronds)

falcata             From Latin = sickle-shaped (referring to its fronds)
