Ant Orchid or Autumn Bird Orchid

Family:            Orchidaceae

Plant:              A terrestrial orchid up to 10cm high that often forms large colonies.

Flowers:         Green-bronze to brownish-purple solitary on an erect stem. The labellum is up to 4mm wide with an arrangement of stalked and unstalked dark calli.

Flowering:      March-May.

Fruit                Green capsule. The flowering stem bearing the capsule elongates after pollination.

Leaves:          Two basal leaves 3-6cm long and up to 15mm wide with wavy margins.

Habitat:           Sheltered damp places in both wet and dry sclerophyll forests.

Features:       Pair of basal leaves. Labellum with insect-like arrangement of calli. Green-bronze to brownish-purple flower.

Chiloglottis    From Greek chielos = a lip and glottis = tongue (referring to the shape of its labellum)

diphylla          From Greek = 2-leaved
