Bird's Nest Fern

Family:            Aspleniaceae

Plant:              A spectacular epiphytic fern with fronds up to 1m long arranged in a circular fashion.

Fronds:           Erect and entire with wavy margins that are glossy and bright green. The midrib is strongly keeled beneath, fronds 60-100cm long and up to 20cm wide.

Sori:                In rows 4-6cm long, 1-2mm apart extending from the rachis almost to the margin.

Rhizome:        Erect stout and covered with scales.

Habitat:           Growing on trees and rocks in rainforest.

Features:       Large spreading plant with bright green fronds growing on rocks and trees. Linear sori on the underside of fronds.

Name:

Asplenium     From Greek = spleen (referring its ancient use as a remedy for diseases of the spleen – thus its old common name Spleenwort).

australasicum          

                        From Latin australis = southern.
