Family:            Myrtaceae

Plant:              An erect shrub up to 2m with corky bark.

Flowers:         Pink to purple 2cm diameter flower heads with numerous stamens. The flowers are borne in ovoid terminal clusters

Flowering:      August-November.

Fruit:               Capsule 5-7mm diameter crowded into cylindrical clusters surrounding the stems.

Leaves:          Lanceolate 5-12mm long and 1-3mm wide, erect, alternate and crowded up the stems. The leaves are rigid with up-curved margins and oil dots.

Habitat:      On damp coastal heathland.

Features:       Pink to purple clusters of fluffy flowers. Rigid leaves held upwards. Woody capsules on stems.

Melaleuca       From Greek melas = black and leucos = white (referring to its black wood and white branches)

squamea        From Latin = scaly (referring to its leaves)
