Ridged Heath Myrtle

Family:            Myrtaceae

Plant:              An erect shrub with stems up to 1m high.

Flowers:         Small white flowers 5mm across with 5 rounded petals and a central disc surrounded by 5-7 stamens. Flowers are stalkless and solitary in the leaf axils.

Flowering:      February-May.

Fruit:               2mm diameter capsule.

Leaves:          Circular to broad-ovate, erect leaves 3-6mm long and up to 5mm wide, opposite, crowded, partly overlapping and aromatic. The apex has a slightly recurved tip.

Habitat:           In heathland near the sea in sheltered rocky places in damp sandy soils.

Features:       Overlapping circular leaves tightly packed around the stem. Aromatic foliage.

Baeckea         After the Swedish physician Dr. Abraham Baeck.

imbricata        From Latin imbrex = roofing tile and atus = like (referring the overlapping edges of its leaves).
