Plant:              A slender tufted sedge up to 50cm high.

Stems:            Round, often grooved, smooth, 50-80cm long.

Flowers:         The inflorescence is erect, fan-shaped and flanked by two large, brown to black pointed bracts 7cm long.

Flowering:      September-November.

Fruit:               Dark brown glossy nut 5mm long and 0.7mm diameter.

Leaves:          Basal, strap-like, narrow, channelled toward apex, up to 30cm long and 1mm wide.

Habitat:           Wet sandy locations usually in heathland.

Features:       Inflorescence with 2 larger bracts. Long thin leaves. Flowering stems longer than the leaves.

Name:

Ptilothrix        From Greek = feather-hair

deusta            From Latin deust = to burn (referring to its blackish bracts)
