Pine Heath

Family:            Ericaceae

Plant:              A low erect or sprawling shrub up to 30cm high.

Flowers:         Solitary 5-lobed tubular flower 2cm long, red turning yellow and green at the tip. They often appear in dense clusters along the upper leaf axils.

Flowering:      May-October.

Fruit:               A pale green globular drupe 10-15mm long.

Leaves:          Narrow-linear 1-2cm long and less than 1mm wide, stalkless, crowded and resembling pine needles.

Habitat:           In heathland and dry sclerophyll forest on sandy soils.

Features:       A low shrub with crowded pine-like leaves. Tubular flowers.

Name:

Astroloma      From Greek astron  = star and loma = a fringe (referring to the tufts of hair on its flowers).

pinifolium      From Latin pinus = pine or fir tree and folius = leaf (referring to its pine-like leaves).
