Family:            Cyperaceae

Plant:              An erect sedge up to 70cm high in dense erect clumps.

Stems:            Erect, deeply grooved, nodeless and 30-90cm long.

Flowers:         Cylindrical, pointed, brown spikelets in an erect panicle with a distinctly zigzag rachis.

Flowering:      December-March.

Fruit:               Obovoid, wrinkled, 3 ribbed, red-brown nut 1-2mm long.

Leaves:          Reduced to 5-15mm long projecting from red-brown sheaths at the base.

Habitat:           In swamps and open damp locations in heathland.

Features:       Zigzag inflorescences on green stems. Red-brown leaf sheath.

Name:

Schoenus       From Greek schoinos = an ancient Greek name for a type of rush.

brevifolius      From Latin brevis = short-leaved and folius = leaf (referring to the length of its leaves).
