Needlebush Hakea or Silky Hakea

Plant:              A prickly, dense spreading shrub up to 3m high.

Flowers:         Tiny cream irregular flowers with a prominent projecting style; borne in axillary clusters of 1-6 heavily scented flowers.

Flowering:      June-October.

Fruit:               Woody, globular to ovoid follicle, 2-4cm long and 1.5-3cm wide with a long wrinkled beak with 2 short upturned points.

Leaves:          Prickly, needle-like 2-5cm long and 1mm diameter more or less at right angles to stem. The mature leaves are without hairs but the young growth is covered with silky white hairs. The leaves end in a sharp black point

Habitat:           Widespread in dry sclerophyll forests and heathland

Features:       Needle-like prickly leaves. Woody follicle with long beak. Heavily scented flowers in clusters of 1-6.
