Xanthorrhoea macronema

Family:            Xanthorrhoeaceae

Plant:              A tufted plant up to 1m high without a trunk and with flowering spike up to a further 1-1.5m high.

Flowers:         Cream to yellow with stamens up to 1cm long. The inflorescence is a brush-like, short spike 1.5-2cm diameter and less than one tenth the length of the stem.

Flowering:      July-August.

Fruit:               Long pointed capsule with glossy seed.

Leaves:          Glossy-green, basal and tufted, strap-like with rough margins, 1-1.5m long, 2-4mm wide, with a triangular cross-section.

Habitat:       Dry sclerophyll forest.

Features:       Short flower spike on a long stem. Flower spike brush-like.

                        From Greek xanthos = yellow and rheo = flow (referring to its resin).

macronema   From Latin macro = large and nemus a forest (referring to its size and habitat).
