Family:            Cyperaceae

Plant:              A slender erect rush up to 70cm high.

Flowers:         Inflorescence narrow spike-like 3-10cm long and up to 1cm diameter. Spikelets 4-5mm long, are few in number.

Flowering:      October-December.

Fruit:               A shiny red-brown to black ovoid nut 2-3mm long.

Stem:              Grey-green, cylindrical 1-2mm diameter

Leaves:          Reduced to light brown to red mucronate sheaths along the stem and at the base of stems.

Habitat:           Mostly in brackish or saline swamps near the sea.

Features:       Rush with greyish-green stems. Common on damp sandy soils.

juncea             From Latin juncea = rush-like.
