Shiny Fan Fern or Umbrella Fern

Family:            Gleicheniaceae                      

Plant:              An erect or straggling fern up to 1m high with green or brown wiry erect stems.

Fronds:           Ultimate segments are linear 2-3cm long, toothed and arranged along branching stems to form spreading, umbrella-like fronds up to 1m long.  The pinnules are shiny green on upper side and pale below.

Sori:                Single row on each side of mid-vein.

Rhizome:      Long, creeping, wiry and covered with brown scales.

Habitat:           In rainforest and wet sclerophyll forest in creeks, damp soaks and moist gullies.

Features:       Upright stems. Spreading umbrella-like fronds. Pinnules set at angle of 45O to rachis.

Name:

Sticherus       From Greek sticho = a row or line (referring to its sori).

flabellatus      From Latin flabellum = small hand fan (referring to its fan-like fronds).
