Xyris bracteata (formerly Xyris gracilis subsp. laxa)

Plant:              A tufted herb up to 60cm high.

Flowers:         Yellow, 2cm diameter with 3 broad spreading lobes and large, dark brown bracts below. Heads of flowers are borne at top of stems up to 30cm long.

Flowering:      November-January.

Fruit:               Capsule 3-4mm long.

Leaves:          Basal, linear, strap-like, up to 30cm long and 2-4mm wide.

Habitat:           In damp areas in heathland.

Features:       Yellow flowers with 3 broad spreading lobes. Long, basal, tufted, strap-like leaves.

Name:

Xyris               From Greek = cutting knife or shears (referring to its sword-shaped leaves).

bracteata        From Latin bractea = a thin plate and atus = like (referring to the bracts of its flowers).
